David Moyes eyeing Luka Modric

Croatian international midfielder Luka Modric features heavily in new Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti’s plans but Manchester United manager David Moyes hopes to be able to persuade the former Spurs man to leave the Santiago Bernabeu for Old Trafford.

United have already lost out on their primary summer target, Spanish Under-21 international Thiago Alcantara of Barcelona who chose to follow his former boss Pep Guardiola to Bayern Munich after a prolonged chase and with United short of creative midfielders, the United manager believes Modric is the man to provide the spark.

United have also been trailing former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, another Barcelona man with the hope of reuniting him once again with Robin van Persie, a partnership that enjoyed much success at the Emirates Stadium but the club has pinned a lot of their hopes on getting Luka Modric, a player who was targeted by Sir Alex Ferguson before he switched from White Hart Lane to the Bernabeu.

According to reports, United were very close to sealing a deal for the Croatian international but the club’s chairman Daniel Levy spoiled any move for the player by asking for an inflated transfer fee. Modric failed to make much of an impact at Madrid during his first few months at the club with Jose Mourinho using him sparingly but burst onto life after scoring the equalizing goal at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.

Now, with Mourinho having left the club for Chelsea and Ancelotti taking on the reigns of the club, Luka Modric feels that he has a lot more chance of getting a game at the club but at Manchester United, Moyes can guarantee him a starting berth in the side day in and day out and will be the star man in the United midfield.

MODRIC CHASED BY UNITED

Former Manchester United midfielder Lou Macari has said that the club should look into the possibility of signing Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, who is thought to be unhappy at the Spanish club.

The Croatian arrived at the Santiago Bernebeu in the summer for around £ 35 million, but he has largely been a substitute at the club due to his failure to settle in Spanish football. Modric has been utilised in the less important matches by manager José Mourinho. As a result, he is thought to be unhappy with life in Spain and is willing to look at other options.

Manchester United were credited with enormous interest in Modric by the man utd news site before he moved to Real Madrid. Sir Alex Ferguson were unable to agree a transfer fee with Tottenham. Even though he has failed to live up to the expectations, Macari still thinks that Modric is one of the best midfielders in the world. Due to the retirement of Paul Scholes, United will be having one of their weakest midfielders for several years. Macari thinks that the arrival of Modric could strengthen the United team even further, as they will be preparing for the defence of their league title next season.

The club recently managed to win its 20th league title.

“One name that keeps cropping up is Luka Modric. If they did sign someone like him I’m not sure where they can go wrong. He’s proved that he can do it in the Premier League. He knows what football in this country is about so you don’t need to worry about some of the things you need to think about with other players coming in from abroad. It seems a real possibility that he could join Manchester United,” said Macari in a recent interview. Modric has made just 28 appearances this season.

MODRIC SHOWS HIS CLASS

The former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric has been one of the highly criticised players at Real Madrid this season. The Croatian midfielder was brought to the club for £ 35 million, but he has been extremely poor.

However, he more than proved his class by helping Real Madrid progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions league. He scored the first goal for the club in the 2-1 win over Manchester United, which helped Real Madrid progress 3-2 on aggregate. Madrid were in danger of being one of the competition after they were trailing 2-1 on aggregate as a result of the Sergio Ramos own goal in the first half. Keep Reading

NOT AT HIS BEST

The Croatian midfielder Luka Modric has admitted that he has not been at his best in his first six months at Real Madrid. The former Tottenham midfielder was a £ 35 million signing for the Spanish club in the summer. He was expected to straightaway make a huge impression at the club due to the fact that he has been experienced a lot with top-flight football. Modric has been one of the best players for Tottenham in the last four seasons, while he has helped them to finish in the top four positions in two of the last three seasons.

However, he has struggled with form and consistency during the first six months at the Santiago Bernabeu, which has seen him only start a handful of matches. The 27-year-old was recently voted by the Spanish football fans as the worst signing in the summer. Modric has chosen not to make any excuses for his poor performances by saying that there is a lot of pressure when it comes to playing for Real Madrid. He has said that there had been a few good performances from him and he hopes to build on them in the future. The 27-year-old has managed to start only eight matches for the club.

“This is Real Madrid. I understand there is great pressure for new signings to succeed here. I’m not making excuses, I am not that kind of person, but it is very challenging to adapt to life at a big club like Madrid. I have had a few good performances, if not in every game, but I believe that I can prove I have something to offer,” said the midfielder. Real Madrid on a whole have been poor in the league this season, which has seen Barcelona open a 16 point advantage in the table.
